MYLC Focus?

MYLC members will be introduced to several issues facing Indianapolis and then engage in substantive discussions utilizing their own perspectives as well as those they learned through community conversations and listening sessions with their peers. In addition to monthly meetings, MYLC members will have the opportunity to experience Indianapolis through their Community Impact Days (community service), meet a variety of City leaders, explore various organizations and civic community events.

MYLC structure:

·       25 students serve on the council

·       10 Meetings per year, an orientation session, and a few extra learning experiences.

·       4-6 Community Impact Service Days

 MYLC members are required to:

  • Live and attend school in Marion County.

  • Be either juniors or seniors during their term of service.

  • Attend at least 80% of sessions throughout the program (some of these may be mandatory).

  • Adhere to a code of conduct.

Who is a good candidate for the Council?

Any student who meets the requirements above and has a heart to serve. We are looking only to find several unsung heroes or quiet leaders who have a passion for making the city a better place. The MYLC members will be intentionally selected to reflect diverse perspectives.

Who will work with the Council?

This is a collaboration between the Mayor’s Office, Leadership Indianapolis, and the Marion County Commission on Youth (MCCOY). The primary advisor to the Council is the Director of Youth Engagement| Empowerment & Outreach, who is a staff member of MCCOY.

What are the primary goals for the Council?

The intended outcomes for the Council include: (a) increased youth engagement and civic involvement in Indianapolis, (b) better decision making by community leaders on matters pertaining to youth, resulting in stronger and safer neighborhoods, (c) the development of personal, life, and workplace skills in the youth participants, and (d) a more positive view of youth and their capacities and abilities by adults.
