Interior design sketch of bathroom and kitchen

Interior Design Forum workshop blends tradition and innovation in creative learning, covering areas in applied critical thinking and exploration with materials. During the workshop, students explore the fundamentals of 2D and 3D concepts, learn basic drawing and illustration skills, play with color use and light effects, and learn how interior environments affect human behavior. Students design either a restaurant or shoe shop going through the entire design process.

Forum participants explore design process, concept development, graphic communication, lighting design, materials and furniture selections/specifications and perspective drawings and much more. Professors and teaching assistants walk the students through the process from the beginning to the end. Students also have the opportunity to learn from industry veterans representing design firms and organizations while creative industry leaders from around the country host guest lectures and Q+A sessions with students.

Participants in the YIDF benefit from the workshop in numerous ways:

  • A three credit hours of Program Elective course will be waived, if the student decides to come to BSU for their undergraduate degree.

  • Through this workshop, students have created a major piece of their portfolio that can be used when applying to interior design program, where portfolio submission is one of the requirements.

  • Students completing this workshop will perform at a different level during first year of any design program at college level.

  • With the knowledge gained, less likely they will change their major at the end of first year, if they start interior design at college level.

Workshop Format

The online forum workshops will use Canvas and WebEx or Zoom. Canvas provides a password protected online environment where the students can submit their work and communicate with the professor and fellow students using discussion boards, chat rooms, and centralized email WebEx and Zoom allows us to meet with everyone in the workshop online without leaving the comforts of the home. The online session is limited to 12 students, so apply early to ensure your place in the studio.

What participants said:

"This workshop allowed me to experience the world of interior design in a quicker form than a regular course. The friendly critiques and the relaxed environment encouraged me to put in the work and be proud of my final project. It solidified my desire to pursue interior design in college."
- Avonlea

I found this workshop valuable because in a single month I got an inside look on what interior design is, and the process designers go through in transforming a plain room into a gorgeous space that you can’t look away from. From a mission statement to a finish floor plan, you really learn all the steps to complete a project.
— Kayleigh
This workshop gave me an idea of what the Interior Design curriculum is like. I also learned about things that I never would have known until I get into college. The workshop gave me knowledge to bring into college that my peers won’t have.

Ball State University Design Works Academy

The Designworks Summer Workshop is an opportunity to experience Ball State University’s College of Architecture and Planning. Over the course of two weeks, high school students will be exposed to a variety of design fields such as architecture, landscape architecture and urban planning. Attendees will work closely with both faculty and current college students, who take an active role in the learning process and engage individual students to teach the basics of structural and environmental design. During this two-week workshop, students will be tasked with a variety of design scenarios that test their creative problem-solving abilities. By the end of the course, they will have learned essential skills required for 2D drawing, 3D model building, and presenting concepts to clients. This workshop is meant to emulate the design studio experience and may be more rigorous than the average high school student might expect. However, the studio environment is both social and educational, and students will grow closer to their peers by overcoming design problems together. This course also includes multiple field trips throughout the workshop which showcase the ideas and principles of design that students are learning in the classroom, providing tangible references to draw from in the future. Although the coursework will keep you busy, there will still be time to relax and have fun. Students will stay in the on-campus dorms overnight (supervised by teaching assistants) and can socialize after class, providing a genuine college experience.
