Introduction to Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (PHSC 10000) is a team-taught, asynchronous, online elective course offered to high school and first year college students interested in learning about the variety of career opportunities in pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences. This program was created for high school and community college students along with first year college students interested in learning about the variety of career opportunities in pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences.

The dates for the fall semester run from August 19 – December 7.

Exp: 6122024

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • critically evaluate various career paths (PharmD and BSPS) in order to have an informed perspective on a student’s potential/chosen major and profession.

  • utilize various career development tools (i.e., resume, cover letter, networking, elevator pitch) in order to equip the student with tools that can be used to assist in pursuing a chosen major/career path.

  • describe resources available to students and strategies in order to help students establish a strong foundation for success at Purdue.

The course is offered for one-credit hour to Purdue students and as a zero-credit hour certificate course for non-Purdue students; however, non-Purdue students who become students of Purdue’s College of Pharmacy will receive a one-credit hour elective for successful completion of the course.

PHSC 10000 introduces students to the profession of pharmacy, the pharmaceutical sciences and a bit about Purdue University’s College of Pharmacy. The topics presented in the course allow students to develop informed perspectives on career opportunities for PharmD graduates/pharmacists; career opportunities for Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Science (BSPS) graduates; professionalism; and career development tools (cover letter, resume, “elevator pitch”, networking).

During the fall semester, the instructors post a 50 minute lecture every Wednesday morning (by 12 noon EST). By that Friday evening (at midnight EST), the student will need to have listened to the lecture and submit a short reflection - the reflection will take 10 minutes or so. In addition, throughout the semester, the course syllabus includes three larger assignments: development of a resume, cover letter, and a 30-second "elevator pitch" - students have several weeks to complete these larger assignments. On average, the course takes 1 hour – 1.25 hours each week.

$175; however, if registration occurs by July 1, the fee is $150.

The dates for the fall semester run from August 19 – December 7.
